Candidate Declaration - I confirm that the attached portfolio is all my own work* and does not include any work completed by anyone other than myself
I prepared for the audition when we heard about it, because I wanted to make sure I was fully prepared and ready for when the time come, I wrote my monologue on the same day we were told we had too, and I spent the rest of the time leading up to it learning the extract and monologue, I rehearsed the extract with Sophia until we decided the best plan of action was to do a duologue together, considering I was going for Laurie and she was going for Jo, it's the perfect match, we decided on page 35 and 36.
Page 35 and 36 are the pages where Laurie asks Jo to marry him and he get's rejected and friend-zoned. We spent several hours rehearsing, when we could, and then the weekend came, and we had to do it by ourselves. I went over the scene in my head to get the lines right, to the point I didn't need the script and I could recite the scene without someone else or a script in my hand. We spent Monday night further rehearsing until we got it how we liked, and decided to record it, so that we could further develop our characterisation to bring the characters truly to life.
Then the actual audition drew upon us, it's felt like this entire week has gone by so quickly and It's suddenly happened. I came into college dressed in a full suit to fully look the part. As Laurie is a Gentlemen and whilst he struggles with Etiquette he knows how to dress and how to hold himself properly as he is marginally richer than the March family. Then when we were sent away to wait, I looked at my time, I was on the first ones to go on, 10:45am. I was anxious but really excited to prove my worth. All I could do is hope I did well. I spent the time waiting, preparing further by going over the extract and monologue, and then it was time for us to go in.
We walked into the room, talked to Kelly and Kane for a small bit before they asked us why we chose these characters. I initially said that I wanted a challenge, as the only real challenge that I felt like I've had was Jack, because I had never been a lead before him and I did well, so I'd like to add to that and try and get another lead role, to prove to myself that I can do it, that I'm capable. To which I was then asked from the characters perspective instead of my own, in which case I said; In a world where Etiquette is everything, Laurie whilst upper class, still falls short on it, having to be corrected by his tutor Mr Brookes constantly, up until where he get's rejected by Jo, which is a sort of wake-up call for him, as after he goes abroad and comes back, he's a pure Gentlemen, he has class, and has fully embraced the Societies etiquette. He's unique, in his own, boyish way.
Thus, we got on with the audition, we did the scene fully, and I was confident once I got into the zone, I pictured my girlfriend as I proposed to try and replicate the love I have for her but use it as a source to display the feeling on stage. The extract went as exactly as rehearsed, and I don't think I could've done better, I do however feel like I fell off on the American accent a few times so if I were to do it again I'd try and keep conscious on it, as whilst I'm half American, I still need to try and maintain the accent, even if some words I pronounce normally are from American English.
After the extract it was the monologues, with Sophia going first. I was incredibly proud of her after, because the monologue she made was quite large, it was about a page long whereas mine was only a small paragraph. Regardless, I didn't let it get me down or intimidate me, so I performed it. On reflection, I did add some parts in but I personally liked what I said, I do think I shouldn't have left a gap in some points, however I think I did well on emphasising his love for music, instead of the business his grandad wants him to go into.
And with that, the audition was over, I personally think it went well, but I suppose time will tell if it was worthy enough to get the part, I'd like to think so, but I'll see.
