30/01/23 National Connections auditions

Today was about connections and the auditions attached to them. We did a warmup with a ball, that was new to us, it was like volleyball, but with different steps, the first step was just to keep it in the air, until we got to twenty people, then after we achieved that we had to run to the wall and stay there. That took several attempts as some people didn't fully concentrate or didn't understand what to do, but eventually we worked it out. Then the next step was to get into teams and land the ball in a bin, several teams took several tried until one succeeded. Unfortunately it wasn't my team that won but we came second as we got further than the third group.

After which we did National Connections. I directed my group more for their audition. I was disappointed at first due to them not remembering the advice I gave them prior, and so we had to redo that. Then there was confusion with a scene before they decided in focusing on the adult versions of the characters. I tried helping up until the actual auditions where I was allowed to sit in and watch them, which I took many notes on. Morgan took notes on the first 3 groups before going to makeup for a project of theirs, I didn't take notes on group 5 as someone else in production did, so I did the rest.

My notes on the auditions:

Group 4:

Blocking, can't see Callum at the start
Oldest and younger are merged, confusing
Feels like they don't know where to go/what to do
Emotion from olders
Jack's anchored to the script, needs to look up more
Olders are in a straight line
Youngers are clumped too often
Need to sound more panicked when hearing the bang

Group 6:

Aidan's good placement
Sophia and Gracie miming how the set goes is good
Taron looks like he doesn't know what to do with his placement
1000% Bigger reactions needed

Callum & Charley

Good chemistry
Good reactions
Believable
Charley's reactions need to be a little less emotional
Stefis not supposed to be heartbroken, but it feels like she is
Callum keeps pacing
Almost doesn't feel natural

Group 7:

In a line
Harvey needs to sound more awkward with his lines
Stefi could be doing her own thing while listening, such as cleaning.
Break up clump of line

Callum & Phoebe

Phoebe needs a little more emotion in her voice
It's not believable on "Oh god is it Tuesday?"
Monotone voice
More eye contact

Group 9:

They seem panicky, very good
