16/11/22 Wizard Of Oz
We've started rehearsing our next production: Wizard of Oz
We had our auditions not too long ago, I went for the role of King of the flying monkeys, and while I did end up obtaining the part it wasn't without it's struggles. I first had to learn and research how most actors portrayed an animal, and then I thought it'd be best to imagine how a neanderthal would speak. This lead to me editing my lines slightly, making them slightly shorter with words missing here and there, lowering my voices pitch and talking as how I believe a caveman would. In the audition my tutor told me to watch clips from Wicked as they have flying monkeys in, and look up on how monkeys behave around each other, which I'm going to do when I begin my rehearsals this following Monday.
In the meanwhile I've been learning how to become a munchkin, with behaviour, voice, movement, thinking about their personality, how they would be around each other, around the wicked witch, finally recognising they're free, what they would do before and after meeting Dorothy, essentially an entire backstory to cement the character of a munchkin into stone and truly find out what it would be like to become one.
I chose to audition for the role of the flying monkey king because I genuinely believe that it would challenge me. It's a very physical role, and it's an animal that speaks which alone has its difficulties, I've had to change how I walk, talk and behave, I know this role will challenge me as an actor and I can't wait to find out more about how I can develop it as a character.
