Blood Brothers Callbacks
We had waited a few hours, doing preparation for the callback auditions, as everyone got a callback for the role they auditioned for. So we had to learn the other script extracts that had our characters in it, to be prepared for the callbacks. To show our chemistry between characters that matched in the script, we needed to show if we could bounce off each other and make it seem believable. I had a chemistry test with a Mickey, a Mrs Lyons and a trio between Mickey and Linda. All of which I had to act as a seven year old in. Apart from the role I auditioned for as Eddie, I was also asked to audition for Narrator. So I went through the script and looked for something that the Narrator says and kept going over it until I learned it completely.
The Narrator stays in the show from beginning till end, as a metaphor for the devil who's always present due to what happens to the brothers at the end of the show. What he does is self explanatory as he narrates what's happening at certain points, always a looming presence over the two's lives.
Edward Lyons is the brother who was given away to Mrs Lyons because of emotional blackmail during the scene of the play where Mrs Johnston is harassed by Mrs Lyons to give away her child to her. He then grows in a more articulate and correct life-style compared to Mickey who grew up poor and "common".
My thought process was, If I wanted Eddie, I needed these to be the best set of Auditions I've ever done, and I really tried, although I did over-think about points about my placement, and how a seven year old would move around yet also be articulate in the way they do it. After which I had to do my Narrator audition, after waiting for Kelly to finish writing and giving me the go-ahead, I began the extract, saying it and performing it how I would if I was the Narrator, such as I did with Eddie, as to me, there's no point in going for a role, if you aren't going to give it your all, even if you don't really want the part you should still give it your all.
After the Narrator audition, we waited for a cast list to come out, which was incredibly nerve wracking as I had gotten to college at 11:15 to study maths but the cast list came out at around 1:15. When we were told what roles we got I was a little disappointed to be sure, but I secured Narrator despite only having one Audition for him. And considering Narrator is also a really good part, my disappointment soon turned into excitement that I could narrate the story of the two brothers.
However the Odd thing about this cast list was, there was 3 casts, and six shows, two shows for each cast, there's one for children/school students and another for parents and adults. There's an ensemble of five who are in each six shows, except if you got a named role, you'd only be in the cast shows that you're in and you wouldn't be in the others. This is my first time being in a triple cast, but I'm sure it'll be fun, till Monday, where our first rehearsal begins!
